The Seattle Fire Department Relief Association was founded
as a result of the tragic death of Herman Larsen. He was the first Seattle Fire
Fighter killed in the line of duty on March 9, 1891, from injuries sustained
during a drill three days earlier. As donations were raised to provide Herman
Larsen's family with the funds to enable them to pay for his funeral expenses,
the idea to for an organization administered by fire fighters to benefit fire
fighters was born. Specifically, the idea was to create a support system
consisting of fire fighter families that would band together and be there for
their fellow brothers and sisters during times of financial difficulties and
other hardships. The Seattle Fire Department Relief Association was formed in 1891
and incorporated by the State of Washington on October 1, 1892.
